What Should an Oil Change Involve?

An oil change is actually more accurately an oil and filter change. Both components have a big impact on how well your engine runs.

Drain and Replace the Oil

You mechanic will likely check the oil level and condition before starting your oil change. This will give them an idea of how long it’s been since you last got an oil change and how well you have been taking care of your car. Once they have checked your oil, they will drain it into a pan placed beneath your car and replace it with all new oil.

Change the Oil Filter

Before adding new oil, your mechanic should also replace your oil filter. The oil filter becomes dirty over time and is less able to filter out dirt and metal particles. If those are able to get into the engine, they can cause extra damage over time. By replacing your oil filter every time, you get an oil change, you know that the oil inside your engine is staying as clean as possible.

Factors That Impact Oil Change Frequency

One thing to think about is the age of your car. If your car is more than fifteen or so years old, you should aim to get your oil changed more often – closer to every 5,000 miles or six months. If you have a newer car, you can go a bit longer between oil changes, but it’s still recommended to at least get the service done every six months.

Another factor is the type of driving you’re doing. If you’re sticking to typical city and highway driving, you can go longer in between oil changes. However, if you take your car off-roading or frequently tow heavy loads, you should get your oil changed more often. It all has to do with how much strain is being put on your engine and how dusty or dirty the conditions are.

No matter what, if it’s been a while since you last had an oil change and you notice a difference in how your car runs – get your car to a mechanic.
