Q:  How often does my car need a tune up?

A:  As long as your car wasn’t made before 1970, a tune up once every 30,000 miles should suffice. A tune up is a good idea for several reasons, foremost because it make you aware of potentially larger issues that will cost more money if not taken care of as soon as possible. Q:  Should I take my car to the dealership?

A:  Dealerships tend to charge higher rates. AAMCO Central Florida offers more personalized service than you’ll find from a large dealership, plus we have many locations to serve you in Central Florida and nationwide. 

Check Engine Light & Car Not Starting

Q:  Why won’t my car start?

A: There are many reasons why your car is having difficulty starting, or won’t start at all.

  • Bad starter
  • Alternator is failing
  • Fuel pump is failing or fuel line is clogged
  • Fuel injector is bad or clogged
  • Spark plugs are worn out
  • Bad or failing Engine Control Module (ECM)

Q:  My check engine light is on. What should I do?

A:  There are many sensors and computerized components that manage your vehicle’s engine performance and emissions. When one of these fails, the “check engine” light comes on. Although your car might seem fine, we suggest bringing it in to your local AAMCO Central Florida for an inspection. We’ll do a thorough review of all major systems in your car. We check to make sure you are completely up to date on recommended factory maintenance and your car is safe and efficient. We identify any issues and recommend the necessary repairs, but we don’t do any work without your approval.

Q:  Is it necessary to replace my timing belt at the recommended interval?

A:  YES. The timing belt regulates the speed at which your engine runs. When the timing belt breaks, the engine is thrown into chaos – all its systems and moving parts are suddenly thrown out of sync. The engine then seizes up and stops running. If you’re lucky, the piston rods don’t blow through the engine block, or some other massive damage has not occurred. You will end up having your car towed to a mechanic, for quite possibly some terrible news. You might be facing a lot of expensive repairs, if repairs are even possible, or you might just have to get a new car.

Q:  What should I do if my car starts to overheat?

A:  This is a very serious problem – if your car overheats for too long, you can damage your engine. As soon as possible, find a safe place to pull off the road and shut the engine off! Do not attempt to check the fluid level in the radiator as it can burn you. The best thing to do is to call your Local AAMCO Central Florida location, towing will be available.


Q:  What should I do if I hear strange sounds in my car?

A:  Noises can be serious; it is best to have our vehicle checked by one of your local AAMCO Central Florida professional technicians. 

When should I…?

Q:  When should I change my oil? How many miles between oil changes?

A:  You should get your oil changed every 3000 miles or as recommended in your vehicle’s owner’s manual.


Q:  When should I have my car’s alignment checked?

A:  To maximize the life expectancy of your tires, alignment should be performed once a year or every 10-12,000 mile.


Q:  When should I replace my car’s fuel filter?

A:  To help ensure dependable, trouble-free performance, replace your car’s fuel filter approximately every 30,000 miles or as recommended in your vehicle’s owner’s manual.


Q:  When should I change my spark plugs?

A:  For maximum fuel economy and peak engine performance, your spark plugs should be replaced every 30 months or 30,000 miles, unless your vehicle is equipped with 100,000-mile platinum tipped spark plugs. 

What is that…?

Q:  What is that milky brown engine oil?

A:  Milky brown engine oil is an indication of coolant in the oil. This can be caused by a blown head gasket (other gasket) or cracked casings. This condition is very serious and needs to be checked by a professional technician quickly.


Q:  What is that smell coming out of the air conditioning vents when I turn the a/c on?

A:  The air conditioning filter is dirty and collecting mold. Have your A/C system check out by your local AAMCO.


Q:  What is that clicking noise when making sharp turns?

A:  Most likely the C.V. axles are in need of replacement. Have your front end checked by a professional technician.


Q:  What is synthetic motor oil?

A:  Synthetic motor oils can be a good choice for high output, high mileage vehicles, turbocharged or supercharged engines, vehicles that are used for towing (especially during hot weather), or vehicles that are operated in extremely cold or hot climates. 

How do I…?

Q:  How do I make sure my car battery has a good electrical connection?

A:  Check the terminals for any corrosion, rust or dirt buildup. Any of these elements is a bad sign. Ensure the terminals are covered and secure. Battery cables and terminals should be cleaned and inspected to make sure they provide a good electrical connection.


Q:  How do I replace a burned-out fuse?

A:  Your best bet here is to check your owner’s manual. It should have step-by-step instructions, as well as specifications on what type fuses are required. Always replace burned-out fuses with ones of the same amperage (printed on the fuse). If a fuse continues to blow, you should have the circuit checked professionally by one of our technicians for defects.
