What Does it Mean if You Smell the Exhaust in Your Car?

It could mean several things – but no matter what the cause is for you, you should take your car to an expert mechanic as soon as possible. Exhaust inhalation can be fatal when it happens over a long period of time.

Exhaust Leak

With exhaust smell inside the cabin of your car, an exhaust leak is most likely the cause. What gets tricky is that the leak could be anywhere in the exhaust system, from the exhaust manifolds to the muffler. The way the exhaust reaches the cabin of your car where you’re smelling it is through the vents. If exhaust fumes are floating around your car’s engine, the various vents out of your engine and into your car’s cabin will carry some of those fumes to the inside of your car.

Especially if you consistently smell exhausted when your engine is running, this is a problem that should not be ignored. Take your car to a local mechanic to have it inspected as soon as possible to prevent further damage to your car – and even health problems.

What About Strange Smells?

Sometimes you may notice an unpleasant smell in your car while the engine is running. This also indicates a problem within your exhaust system, though it may be more than just a leak or bad seals.

Failing Catalytic Converter

Notice a smell like rotten eggs? That could mean trouble with your catalytic converter. When a catalytic converter is failing, it is no longer able to break down the sulfur created by the engine. If this is your problem, you’ll need a new catalytic converter, since they cannot be repaired.
