Noticing a strange smell in the cabin of your car while the engine is running? Depending on what it smells like, there are several potential causes, though your most likely culprit is part of the exhaust system
How Does Your Exhaust System Work?
In short, your exhaust system ensures gasses emitted from your car’s engine while running are directed away from the cabin of the car. This is because the exhaust is toxic and in large doses can be fatal. Smelling exhaust inside your car is nothing to joke about, so don’t put off getting your car in for an exhaust repair service.
1. First, your exhaust manifolds are responsible for air intake and combine exhaust from all cylinders into one pipe.
2. From there, your oxygen sensors detect the ratio of oxygen to exhaust to determine how much fuel should be put into the engine.
3. Your catalytic converter changes the exhaust gasses to carbon dioxide, which is more environmentally friendly.
4. Finally, your muffler reduces the noise created by your engine and your exhaust pipe carries away the gasses produced
Poor Door or Window Seals
Another possibility is worn outdoor or window seals. They will gradually degrade over time and eventually outside smells will become more prominent inside your car. This may be a simpler repair but it is still just as important to get fixed as soon as possible. Any time you notice an exhaust smell inside your car, you should get it addressed immediately.
