Automatic transmission systems, just like any other component in your vehicle are prone to fail.     What is a Transmission Control Module?

    Your automatic transmission TCM unit is what controls everything with the transmission in your car. The TCM includes a processor, a memory, and input and output circuits. It is the component that processes the information received from different sensors in your transmission, such as the output and input shaft, oil, and temperature sensors. The memory, on the other hand, is a data center that informs the processor of what processes need to run. The input sensors work to convert signals from the sensors into data for the processor, while the output circuits relay actionable signals to the required actuators.

    Why is your Transmission Control Module Important?

    For starters, your TCM is what helps your car change gears when it needs to. Without this component, your car won’t be able to run efficiently. Furthermore, it could also lead to excessive wear and other mechanic issues when your vehicle is not able to change gears at the required time.

    Also, your Transmission Control Module is what ensures there is optimal efficiency when it signals for a gear change to help you get more fuel for your miles and to keep costs low. It’s through your transmission control module unit that your gears can shift smoothly, reducing wear and tear. One of the core importance of the TCM is alerting the driver when there are issues with the transmission. A faulty TCM unit won’t be able to alert the driver of problems with the transmission, leading to costly damages down the road.

    Can My TCM Unit Fail?

    Your TCM unit is designed to work for the entire lifespan of your vehicle without experiencing any damage. However, like any other electrical component of your car, it is prone to fail. Excess heat from your vehicle’s engine or extensive use can take a toll on the unit and negatively affect its function over time. When your transmission control unit is not functioning as required, you will experience:

    • Poor performance of your automatic transmission system. Your transmission won’t be able to detect when you shift gear into other modes like Drive or Neutral.
    • You will experience a delay in acceleration even if you floor your gas pedal.
    • Damages to your TCM could lead to volt overload, especially if there is a short in the actuator circuit or solenoid or when water and moisture sip into the unit and causes a short circuit.

    How to Care for Your TCM

    Your Transmission Control Model, just like any other vehicle component, needs some TLC.

    • Since it’s part of the electrical unit, it needs to be routinely dried and cleaned. Avoid using water or damp materials while cleaning the surfaces; instead, use methylated spirit or a dry rug.
    • Regularly blow your engine bay to keep dirt and debris out, and prevent rodents or other invasive critters from gnawing your wiring.
    • Ensure your engine is adequately cooled to avoid extreme heat in your engine bay that could damage the TCM unit.
